The use of social media to recruit students, promote colleges and universities, and communicate more effectively with students, parents and alumni is growing1.

A study at The University of Mass-Dartmouth evaluated the use of social media in admissions offices at all U.S. 4-year accredited colleges:
The study found that a substantial number of schools reported that they research students via search engines (23 percent) and social networks (17 percent). Most admission offices are using search engines and social networking sites to verify information or research candidates for scholarships or entry into high-demand programs with limited spaces2.

In 2008, 85% of college admission offices reported using at least one form of social media1.

Facebook was one of the most common social networking sites; used by 61% of admissions departments in relation to college admissions and recruiting efforts2.

41% of colleges utilized a blog1.
